King and Spalding partner Mike Rueckheim was interviewed by Texas Lawyer after a federal jury in the Eastern District of Texas ruled that DoorDash did not infringe on a data management patent held by Fall Line Patents LLC, marking a significant legal victory for the delivery platform.
In representing DoorDash Mr. Rueckheim successfully argued that its software architecture, which operates unprompted due to user privacy protocols, differed from the network communications architecture in the lawsuit, avoiding potential damages once valued at over $1 billion.
“DoorDash knew from the beginning that it was different than the patent,” said Mr. Rueckheim in a statement. “So, DoorDash opted to take this all the way through trial, refusing to be bullied into an unreasonable settlement despite that more than 100 other companies were sued on this patent and on a related patent and presumably settled their cases in order to get them dismissed pre-trial.”
