Hicks Thomas partners J. Stephen Barrick and Courtney Ervin were featured in Law360 after freeing their client, Travelers Property Casualty, Co., from any responsibility to defend Ericsson Inc. against terrorism funding claims.  

The claims were brought by families of military service members who were killed in terrorist attacks after the company paid terrorist organizations in the Middle East to not touch its assets. 

The insurance agreement only covers Ericsson in the event of an accident. However, Mr. Barrick and Ms. Ervin argued the company’s decision to pay the terrorist groups was not accidental, so any attacks afterward could not have been accidental either.
