In the wake of the devastating and deadly flooding in Kerr County, Texas, prominent food and water safety lawyer Jory Lange with the Lange Law Firm addressed the risks of exposure to potentially deadly pathogens that could be lurking in those floodwaters with the Daily Mail.
Flash flooding from the Guadalupe River swept over the Camp Mystic summer camp and the surrounding areas in the early morning hours of July 4, 2025, resulting in more than 100 deaths, including 37 children. There was additional flooding in the days following that tragedy, dredging up bacteria and parasites such as Cryptosporidium, E. coli, Giardia, Legionella, Streptococcus, Salmonella, and Vibrio as many people were working in those waters for recovery efforts and to clean up the debris.
“Wearing protective gear is always a good idea when it comes to any pathogen. If there is exposure, handwashing and sanitizing clothing, surfaces should be done quickly and often,” Mr. Lange told the Daily Mail. “If there are wounds, they should be washed and disinfected immediately and get medical help right away.”
