Dallas Attorney Chad Baruch Gains National Spotlight for Amicus Brief Defending Rap Lyrics in Death Penalty Case

Dallas appellate attorney Chad Baruch with the law firm Johnston Tobey Baruch received national media attention in publications such as Rolling Stone after filing an amicus brief backed by more than 30 artists, scholars and industry leaders, including Killer Mike, T.I., Young Thug, Fat Joe and Anthony Anderson, who argue prosecutors leaned on Broadnax’s lyrics to inflame racial and anti-rap bias.

The high-profile involvement has increased visibility for the clemency petition as legal deadlines approach. This advocacy urges state officials to reassess the case, highlighting the broader national debate on the application of the death penalty.

“Rap lyrics are creative expression,” said Mr. Baruch. “When prosecutors treat them as literal evidence of future violence, they invite jurors to decide a death-penalty case based on fear and stereotypes instead of the law.”
